School Council at KWPS
At Kirkham and Wesham Primary School, we believe that every child should have a voice and the opportunity to make a positive contribution to our school community. Our School Council gives pupils the chance to represent the views of their classmates, share ideas and help shape the future of our school.
Being a School Councillor is an important leadership role that develops confidence, responsibility, teamwork and communication while helping children understand the importance of democracy and active citizenship.
How School Council Works
At the beginning of each academic year, children in Years 2 to 6 are invited to stand for election as a School Councillor.
Pupils who wish to represent their class write a short speech and present to their class why they would make a good councillor before taking part in a democratic vote. Every child has the opportunity to vote, helping them understand the importance of democracy and making informed choices.
Successful candidates proudly represent their class throughout the school year.
What Our School Council Does
The School Council meets regularly throughout the year to discuss ideas, consider suggestions from pupils and help improve school life.
Councillors work together to:
- represent the views of their classmates
- suggest improvements to the school
- contribute ideas for fundraising and charity events
- support whole-school initiatives
- help promote our school values
- encourage positive change within the school community.
Members take their responsibilities seriously and act as positive role models for younger pupils.
Developing Leadership Skills
Being part of the School Council helps children develop valuable life skills, including:
- leadership
- communication
- teamwork
- organisation
- problem-solving
- decision-making
- confidence
- responsibility.
These experiences prepare children for future leadership opportunities both within school and beyond.
British Values in Action
The School Council plays an important role in promoting British Values by giving children first-hand experience of:
- democracy through elections and voting
- individual liberty by expressing opinions respectfully
- mutual respect by listening to different viewpoints
- the rule of law by understanding shared responsibilities
- tolerance through working collaboratively with others.
Children learn that every voice matters and that positive change can be achieved by working together.
Meeting Schedule
The School Council meets regularly throughout the academic year. Meetings are led by Miss Scott with children contributing ideas, discussing current priorities and planning future projects.
Councillors share information with their classes following each meeting to ensure everyone's views continue to be represented.
Our Aim
Through our School Council, we aim to empower children to become confident, responsible and active members of the school community. We want every pupil to understand that they can make a difference and that their ideas and opinions are valued.
